GW2 Latest Development Update

Guild Wars 2

Today, Lead Game Designer Eric Flannum posted on ArenaNet blog updates about the latest development changes, explaining improvements to the compass and meta-events, additions to the open-world content, hidden treasures and much more.

The Compass:
The compass now provides different zoom levels that let you get a better view of your surroundings. Just scroll the mouse wheel in and out to zoom. There’s also a nice little set of buttons to show you which zoom level you’re using. If you need a better look at the world just beyond the compass’s edge, you can also pan the map by right-clicking and dragging. The map will snap back to your character’s position once you start moving again.

Don’t forget: if you want to coordinate tactics with your party, you can use the left mouse button to draw lines and create circular pings they will see on their own compasses.

Meta-Events:
A meta-event might tell you the story of a norn area in danger of being corrupted by the Sons of Svanir, or maybe a human region constantly threatened by centaur armies. When the area is peaceful, you’ll know that the centaurs are being held in check, but when the invasion begins, you’ll see information pointing you where to go to help the people of the world stay safe from centaurs. Driving the centaurs back might require a herculean effort with groups of players destroying several catapults and killing centaur captains. A meta-event can cover a much larger region than a standard event might; you could as much as a quarter of the map thrown into turmoil by a meta-event!

Meta-events provide us yet another tool in our tool kit to create a world that reacts to player actions. Once you run across your first meta-event, we’re sure you’ll come back for more. And keep your eyes open in areas that seem relatively calm. The bandits might be just over the ridge, ready to put the torch to the village!

Hidden Treasures
Another recent development for Guild Wars 2 has been the implementation of hidden areas with interesting challenges. Our amazing environment artists have carved out a variety of caves, cliffs, and structures in the world. We’ve been stretching our imaginations to fill these spaces with content that should provide an exciting change of pace. Some areas will test your platforming abilities, requiring you to make a series of difficult jumps before you find your treasure at the end, while others contain dangerous foes that will stop at nothing to see you dead.

Incredible Guild Wars 2 fan-made trailer

The internet is crowded with creative fans trailers, but today I spotted this incredible Guild Wars 2 – “New Heroes of Tyria” trailer. I can’t imagine the amount of time and the patience it required to piece everything together (images, videos, music) in this unbelievable trailer.

As author stated – “Been working off and on with it since beginning of August 2011”.

No Guild Wars 2 Open Beta in February

Eric Flannum recently posted a lengthy blog post on the Guru forums, discussing statements made by many frustrated fans who weren’t chosen for closed beta testing.

Those of you who are freaking out really need to calm down. Not all of the invites have gone out and certainly not everyone who has been invited has said anything. There are a lot of media involved in this event and a lot of people who aren’t media as well. Remember, we are still in a closed beta phase right now and those beta testers are all under NDA.

A lot of you seem to assume that the only people who are playing in the closed beta are friends and family and that no “real” fans are playing the game. I can assure you that we don’t have nearly enough friends to fill even a modest closed beta and that plenty of “real” fans have and will play the game. As Mike said in his letter we are letting press into this particular event and we are in general letting them talk about their experience. Those who are not press are still under strict NDA.

We never promised that this feb event would be without NDA and we never said this feb event was an open beta of any sort. What we did say was that we are ramping up to larger and larger events and even gave a monthly timeframe. We are sticking to that promise. I hope this helps keep things in perspective.

Guild Wars 2 closed beta starts on 16th December

ArenaNet system designer, Jon Peters, announced via Reddit that Guild Wars 2 will officially enter closed beta testing on Friday, 16th December.

We will officially enter Closed Beta Testing this Friday. It will be marked with an increase in our pool of testers. To clarify, this phase of testing is still under NDA and is not open to the public.
Based on the feedback we get from our current Closed Beta Testing, we will determine the next phases of our beta program in which we will open beta access to more people.

Arena Net has updated their official FAQ with some exciting information about closed alpha and beta tests and the current progress of the game:

We began closed beta in December of 2011. The feedback from these tests will determine when we will do public beta tests and ship the game. Guild Wars 2 is a very large and ambitious game, and Guild Wars players rightfully have very high expectations. We want players to be absolutely blown away by the game the first time they experience it.
